LOCAL MP Warren Entsch is calling on Far North Queensland kids to illustrate how they celebrate ‘Christmas in the Tropics’ for his 2016 Leichhardt Christmas Card competition.
Now in its seventh year, the competition is open to all children in Leichhardt aged from 5 to 12 years inclusive – with the winning illustrations to feature on Mr Entsch’s annual Christmas card, distributed to his Parliamentary colleagues and contacts in FNQ.
“We have unique ways of celebrating the festive season here in Far North Queensland with friends and family,” said Mr Entsch. “People might enjoy a BBQ lunch and then hit the beach or the lagoon, or spend the day on the Great Barrier Reef or in the shade of the rainforest.”
Last year’s theme, ‘Christmas Around the World’, saw more than 150 entries from children all across the Leichhardt electorate.
“It was truly inspirational to see the designs that our kids came up with, exploring how families in other countries celebrate this time of year,” said Mr Entsch.
“They used glitter and glue, crayons, pencils, collage, scrapbooking and even Photoshop to express their creativity.”
Mr Entsch again thanked Cairns Penny for sponsoring the competition.
“The Cairns Penny team continues to show their support for our community and have once again donated $150, $100, and $50 First Penny accounts for our first, second, and third prize-winners,” he said.
“They’ve also provided an additional five $20 accounts for designs that show special merit.”
Peter Phillips from Cairns Penny said: “We enjoy being able to support the artistic flair of kids in Far North Queensland.
“This year we’ll again be displaying the entries on the Cairns Penny wall for everyone to come in and admire throughout the holiday season and following 12 months – it’s become our own Christmas tradition, and one that our customers have grown to love,” said Mr Phillips.
All schools will receive the application forms and conditions of entry this week so that kids can begin designing their entries. The competition will close at 5pm on Friday, 28th October.
Forms can also be collected from Mr Entsch’s office at 200 Mulgrave Road, from Cairns Penny at 22/24 Grafton Street, or downloaded from www.warrenentsch.com.au
All entries should be dropped off at Mr Entsch’s office or posted to PO Box 14, BUNGALOW, QLD 4870. They must be the original design, in a horizontal A4 format, with a completed application form attached, as all entrants will receive a personalised Certificate of Appreciation.
