The Coalition Government will invest $1 million to secure the future of the Cairns Men’s Shed.
The investment was secured in this year’s federal budget as part of the government’s highly-successful Community Development Fund.
Federal Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch, who is also the shed’s patron, said he had been working closely with Cairns Men’s Shed, particularly Bob Lavington, to secure this much-needed funding.
He said this was about listening, acting and delivering for the community.
“We can invest in this type of community infrastructure, without having to increases taxes, because of our responsible economic management and strong economy,” Mr Entsch said.
“This investment will make a real and significant difference to the hundreds of people who use Cairns Men’s Shed on a daily basis.
“This is something I am extremely proud to be able to deliver for the community.”
Mr Entsch said the $1 million investment will go towards allowing the club to purchase its existing premises and undertake further expansion.
“The Cairns Men’s Shed has come along in leaps and bounds over the past few years and is widely regarded as one of the best sheds around,” he said.
“Like all sheds across Australia, the Cairns shed offers support to any local men who need a bit of space and some friendly, easy-going company.
“Men are often the last ones to make their health and wellbeing a priority.
“It is imperative we do what we can to ensure they get the support they need and deserve and I hope this investment gives members the peace of mind now their sheds future is secured.”
Cairns Men’s Shed president Bob Lavington said the investment was welcome news that would be warmly received by all members.
“Having our own premises will not only provide security for the future but ensure we can continue to provide assistance to other community organisations,” Mr Lavington said.
“With the unwavering support and hard work of Warren Entsch, this investment from the Coalition Government will ensure our vision will continue to be realised for existing members and those that follow.”
