THE bridge over the Laura River, north of Laura township, will again be known as ‘Shelleys Crossing’ thanks to successful community lobbying efforts, says Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch.
“I welcome the decision by Mark Bailey MP, Queensland Minister for Main Roads, Road Safety and Ports, to officially name the bridge in memory of Ms Shelley Shephard and reinstate the signage,” Mr Entsch said.
“I’ve been very supportive of moves to make this happen since I was first contacted by community members many months ago.
“I’d particularly like to recognise the efforts of Laura De Vaurno from the Hann River Road House, who successfully drove this application with the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads.
“Shelley was well-known and loved within the Cape York community. The formal naming of the bridge as ‘Shelleys Crossing’ will enable those of us who knew her to continue to be reminded of her strength, determination and bravery in dealing with her health challenges.
“Shelley was amazing in her work to improve people’s understanding of cystic fibrosis. While she was taken far too soon, there is no doubt that her legacy is a greater awareness throughout Cape York and our local communities about this insidious disease.”
