Federal Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch is pleased to announce a transformative opportunity for the community with the expansion of the Regional University Study Hubs program.
Following a comprehensive Interim Report in July 2023 by the Australian Universities Accord Panel, the number of Regional University Study Hubs across the country is doubling.
“This is fantastic news for Leichhardt, where such an initiative can greatly impact the educational outcomes and employment prospects of our regional communities,” said Mr Entsch.
Regional University Study Hubs are community-owned facilities that offer critical support to students studying at any Australian tertiary institution. These hubs aim to improve diversity, equity of access, and student outcomes while allowing students to continue living in their communities.
“This is an investment in the future of our young people, especially those who are the first in their families to undertake tertiary study and has the potential to greatly improve remote access for higher education,” added Entsch.
The program’s impact is already measurable. In 2023, the 34 existing hubs supported over 3,400 students, with 41 per cent being the first in their family to attend tertiary study and 11 per cent identifying as First Nations.
This latest round of the Regional University Study Hubs program builds upon the success of earlier rounds, such as the recent facility that opened in Cooktown in July this year—known as the Country Universities Centre Cape York.
Community-owned organisations in Leichhardt are encouraged to apply for funding to establish a new Regional University Study Hub. Applications are now open and will close at 5:00 pm AEDT on 15 December 2023.
“I strongly urge local organisations to consider this fantastic opportunity,” said Entsch.
“We need to bring university education closer to home, and this program is a significant step in the right direction,” concluded Entsch.
