FEDERAL Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch has congratulated China Southern Airlines on its first direct flight to Cairns today and warmly welcomed our newest arrivals.
Mr Entsch said it was a great day for our city with China Southern Airlines commencing three direct flights per week between Cairns and Guangzhou, a thriving city with a population of 14 million residents.
“As the local Federal Member, and also in my capacity as the Chair of the Joint Select Committee into Northern Australia, I know that growth and investment in the Australia – China market will be pivotal in increasing industry in our region, across Northern Australia and the whole country,” Mr Entsch said.
“Even with the ‘lowest scenario’ forecast spend by Chinese visitors of $7.4 billion being met by 2020, we must support our Asian business partners and neighbours to visit and invest in Far North Queensland as much as possible.
“The Federal Government has worked hard with China Southern Airlines for a very long time to make this a reality and capitalise on the extensive economic opportunities it presents us.
“I’d also like to acknowledge the great work of Cairns Airport Chief Executive Norris Carter, recently retired Chairman Max Shepherd and Tropical Tourism North Queensland, and Mayor Bob Manning and Cairns Regional Council for their part in helping to secure this deal,” Mr Entsch said.
“This new business partnership has been a long time in the making and offers substantial economic benefits for many years to come.
“It also positions Cairns to become the must-go-to resort destination for one of the fastest growing populations in the world and strengthens the existing relationships and history we already have with the Chinese community,” Mr Entsch said.
