A variety of aged care services and support options are available to
help older people in Far North Queensland stay independent and enjoy life.
Speaking at the Opening of the Association of Private Nursing Services
Conference in Cairns today, Federal Member for Leichhardt, Warren Entsch said the Federal Government’s My Aged Care campaign aims to encourage older Australians, their families and carers to find out about their aged care options before a crisis event triggers that need.
“Making inquiries about aged care, before it is needed urgently, makes a lot of sense,” Mr Entsch said.
“Older people want to live independently as long as possible. But when a health crisis or accident happens, they may suddenly find they need help quickly.
“Family members or carers are then scrambling to find out about their
aged care options, and often struggle not knowing where to start.
“This only adds stress to what is already a stressful time.
“That’s why it’s a good idea for older people to talk about their
personal preferences and care options with their families or a health
professional before they need it,” Mr Entsch said.
If you or someone you know might need support, start by visiting the My
Aged Care website or calling the My Aged Care phone line. There you will find information about services available in your local area, how to access them, costs associated and other information.
“My Aged Care is the starting point for older people to find out about
services they can access,” Mr Entsch said.
“Services include home modifications and maintenance, help with
household jobs like cleaning, assistance with transport, and nursing and
personal care.
“The Coalition Government wants all older Australians, their families
and carers to know about their aged care options, and that’s why we are running the national My Aged Campaign to raise awareness.
“If you are finding it harder to do the things you used to do, and feel
you need a bit of support at home, find the help you need with My Aged Care.”
