WARREN Entsch, Federal Member for Leichhardt, has congratulated new Cairns Regional Council mayor Bob Manning, deputy mayor Terry James and councillors on their formal appointment today.
Mr Entsch regretted that he couldn’t attend the ceremony, having flown to the Torres Strait for the funeral of his long time friend and elder George Mye.
However he said that he was looking forward to working with the new team at council, given that the three levels of government local, state and federal could all now work together towards achieving wins for the region.
“I think it’s fantastic that Mayor Manning has reaffirmed council’s commitment to constructing a Performing Arts Centre for Cairns in this term we can’t lose the momentum but it has to be done right,” Mr Entsch said.
“It’s also about time the spotlight went back on the Port Douglas Waterfront redevelopment things have stalled and I know it’s incredibly frustrating for people who want this project to move forward.”
Mr Entsch added that the Unity team’s pledges, such as restoring business confidence, diversifying the regional economy and making Cairns a safer city, were “bang on”.
“This is just what we need to get Cairns back on track I’m excited about the future,” he ended.
