MEMBER for Leichhardt Warren Entsch earlier today launched ‘Sophie’s Petition’, an incredible effort to get a pedestrian crossing by Ellis Beach by nine-year-old road safety crusader Sophie Alcorn.
Sophie Alcorn has been waging a campaign for the pedestrian crossing after her friend Asha was accidentally hit by a car while crossing the road at the popular beachside spot.
Ellis Beach is a popular spot for junior Surf Life Saving Club carnivals and tourists alike, and the issue of road crossings has been ongoing for many years.
Mr Entsch met with Sophie and Asha this morning at Ellis Beach to officially launch their petition calling on the state government to act.
“I congratulate Sophie and Asha on their tenacious determination to seek action from the state government and I am fully supportive of their efforts,” Mr Entsch said.
“I am very frustrated with the state government’s response to this call for increased safety before it’s too late and a tragedy occurs.”
Mr Entsch will join with state LNP candidates Gavin King and Michael Trout to distribute the petition in shops from Cairns to Port Douglas, and it is also available at Mr Entsch’s electorate office and website.
Mr Entsch will hand over all completed petitions to LNP Shadow Minister for Main Roads Mark Robinson to be tabled in state parliament.
