A re-elected Morrison Government will invest $2.5 million to help deliver a fully covered bowling green at Weipa Bowls Club and convert the current grass surfaces to a synthetic surface allowing club members to play year-round including during the wet season.
This funding will also allow for the installation of lighting that to ensure members can play later into the evening and the installation of fans to make the area more comfortable during the summer months.
Once completed the club will be able to extend its playing season, increasing the number of competitions and attracting more participants.
Federal Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch said he had been working closely with the club on this project and was proud to be able to deliver it for the Weipa community.
“The Weipa Bowls Club upgrades formed part of my comprehensive plan for the Leichhardt Community. This is about listening, acting and delivering for the community,” Mr Entsch said.
“The bowls club is very important hub for the Weipa community, not only in a sporting sense but most certainly in a social sense.
“This project will allow the club to expand further, attract new members and hold additional competitions.
“It will give club members and players access to a year-round playing surface which will help bowlers develop their skills.”
Weipa Bowls Club chairman Brad Edie said the announcement was wonderful for the club and the community.
He said Weipa Bowls Club would commit $500,000 towards the $3 million dollar project.
“On behalf of the Weipa Bowls Club, it is my privilege to thank Warren for his extraordinary efforts in securing this grant,” Mr Edie said.
“In combination with funds already available to the committee, the club, its members and the broader community will soon be enjoying a world class facility for the benefit of current and future players of our sport.
Only the Morrison Government will continue to deliver a better future for Leichardt, and this is part of our plan to build a strong economy and a stronger future.
