Federal Member for Leichhardt, Warren Entsch is pleased that his Private Members Motion “Torres Strait Sea Walls” was passed by the house earlier today. The Torres Strait Island Sea Walls Motion was passed in the house with the full support of the Government and the Independents.
“This motion called on the Government to commit to restore and rebuild the damaged sea walls on the outer island of the Torres Strait and this is a huge breakthrough that will encourage protection of the island communities from further devastation.” The Federal Member for Leichhardt said earlier today.
“There is substantial evidence of continued flooding on the outer islands due to King Tides and the success of having this motion accepted today will ensure that we dont see this beautiful part of Torres Strait devastated yet again.” Mr Entsch said.
“The Torres Strait Sea Walls current infrastructure is deteriorating and it needs to be replaced. The passage of my Motion today is an acceptance by this Government that this work needs to be done and is now a commitment that it will be done. This Motion gives a long term future for residents living in these communities and removes the threat of future relocations.” Mr Entsch said.
“It is imperative that the Torres Strait Community Leaders encourage the Government to fulfil this commitment and that they get started right away. I will be ensuring that this is followed through and that we don’t see further delays on this important issue affecting people in Far North Queensland and I look forward to working with Community Leaders on this important issue.”
“I would like to acknowledge the strong support from the Torres Strait Regional Chair, Fred Gela in assisting me in bringing this Motion to the Parliament,” Mr Entsch said.
