Cairns and Far North Queensland will always play a key role supporting the Australian Defence Force.
Cairns and Far North Queensland is home to more than 1,200 Defence personnel and more than 200 Defence housing properties.
There is a range of key ADF facilities across our region, including HMAS Cairns, Porton Barracks, RAAF Base Scherger, and the Joint Defence Facility on Thursday Island.
The federal government has announced more than $300 million towards upgrades at HMAS Cairns to ensure we remain a key Defence location.
I also worked hard behind the scenes to ensure HMAS Cairns became home to four of the nation’s new Offshore Patrol Vessels.
I strongly advocated for all the maintenance on these vessels to be carried out locally – this was very important to me.
It meant more local jobs and opportunities for local businesses.
I will continue working towards ensuring a common-user syncrolift facility in Cairns becomes a reality.
This is the missing piece in the puzzle.
This critical piece of infrastructure will open up a world of opportunities for our region and most importantly it will create more local Defence jobs and opportunities for local businesses.
