Cairns Ring Road
The Cairns Ring Road project is one that I am determined to see come to fruition – it has been used as a political football for far too long.
Put simply, absolutely nothing can be done to advance this project until the Queensland Government requests that the Federal Government extends the Bruce Highway to the Smithfield roundabout.
I do not believe the Queensland Government has made this request to date.
Why must this happen?
The Federal Government only invests in national roads not those owned by local or state governments.
Essentially, the current situation with the Cairns Ring Road is like asking the federal government to fill in a pothole in your local suburban street, it wouldn’t happen as it is not the federal government’s responsibility.
I have been working closely with various stakeholders, including Advance Cairns and the local State MPs, to ensure this project is done correctly the first time.
The last thing we need is some half-baked and under-cooked solution to an issue that affects thousands of residents.
I have written to the Queensland Government Main Roads Minister urging him to take responsibility and pen the letter to his federal counterpart so this project can get moving.
I have yet to receive a response from him.
Furthermore, I have requested the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads provide me with detailed design and costings for this project.
Finally, the federal government has set aside $3.5 billion for Roads of Strategic Importance – this project certainly ticks all the boxes required under that program.
There will be some very exciting news about this project for the community and frustrated motorists within the next year.
