MEMBER for Leichhardt, Warren Entsch MP, is encouraging families, parents, teachers, and community groups in the Douglas Shire to get involved with Australian Heritage Week.
“Australian Heritage Week starts this Saturday and runs until 19 April 2015,” Mr Entsch said. “Australian Heritage Week is an important and lively celebration that encourages us to reflect on the stories and places that make our region unique.
“You might be surprised at what you learn about our local heritage over the coming week.”
Last year Australian Heritage Week saw a variety of activities held across Australia, with events in every State and Territory.
This year, in Mossman, the Douglas Shire Historical Society is holding an exhibition titled ‘Douglas Diggers’ which will open on Tuesday, April 14, at the Douglas Shire Offices in Front St, Mossman, at 2.30pm.
“This is a wonderful local project that really shines a light on those who served in the Douglas region,” Mr Entsch said.
“I congratulate the volunteers who have spent countless hours researching the histories of servicemen who are listed on the Douglas Honour Board for WWI, finding their photos and telling their stories with letters, mementoes and military medals.”
Australian Heritage Week is an initiative of the Australian Government supported by State and Territory heritage agencies and community heritage organisations across Australia.
“With most events free or having a minimal entrance fee, Australian Heritage Week is open to anyone who wants to get involved and there are perfect activities for the kids to enjoy,” Mr Entsch said.
