Cairns RSL Sub Branch and Pandanus Park War Veterans Retreat have securing funding for important projects that recognise our region’s rich military service history under the federal government’s Saluting Their Service program.
Cairns RSL Sub Branch will receive $29,800 towards the production of a documentary commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Second World War that will focus on the memories of veterans and residents of Far North Queensland.
Pandanus Park War Veterans Retreat will receive $2000 to update the Pandanus Park War Veterans Shrine to commemorate the service and sacrifice of Australia’s service personnel in recent conflicts and peace operations.
Federal Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch said our community has a proud military history, with many veterans now calling Far North Queensland home, and many more before them having served our nation
“A community’s military history, through those who have served or continue to serve, is part of its identity,” Mr Entsch said.
“By involving community groups, such as our ex-service organisations, in commemorations we can ensure this history is never forgotten.”
Cairns RSL Sub Branch Events and Marketing Coordinator Rebecca Milliner said the documentary will leave a lasting legacy in the community and help educate the next generation.
“We aim to educate people on our regions rich military history, showcase the significant role our region played in the defence of Australia during the Second World War and portray the impact it had on not only the sleepy tropical township of Cairns but also our people,” Ms Milliner said.
“Receiving this funding means, as the custodians of these historically important events, we are able to uphold our obligation to past, present and future veterans and the greater community.”
Federal Veterans’ Affairs Minister Darren Chester said the funding would provide a boost to the region’s efforts as they prepare for Anzac Day commemorations.
“Australia has a proud history of remembering those who have served our nation, their families and those who wear the military uniform today,” Mr Chester said.
“I congratulate Cairns RSL Sub Branch and Pandanus Park War Veterans Retreat on its successful application to carry on this proud legacy of remembrance.
“With commemorations approaching for the end of the Second World War, this is also an opportunity for organisations to apply for the next grant funding round to mark this important commemorative anniversary.”
Applications are now open for the next funding round.
The next funding round closes on 31 March 2020.
