The Morrison Government has made a long-term commitment to the eradication of Yellow Crazy Ants in the Wet Tropics across Cairns and Far North Queensland.
A re-elected Morrison Government will provide $3 million to continue work with the Wet Tropics Management Authority over the next 12 months.
Federal Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch also announced that under a Morrison Government the management of Yellow Crazy Ants in the region will come under the National Landcare program to ensure this important work has funding certainty into the future.
He said this would come into effect from July 1, 2023.
“On behalf of our World Heritage Wet Tropics area and local agricultural industry, I have championed the Morrison Government’s response to this important issue, and we have seen some remarkable results from sniffer dogs to world leading environmental science,” Mr Entsch said.
“The lessons learnt here are already being used more widely to attack this horrible pest.
“I will be calling on the Queensland State Government to continue to match the funding.
“The Wet Tropics Management Authority have done a fantastic job on this, and they are actually succeeding with eradication. This is about securing a longer-term vision to ensure we can achieve eradication.
“My congratulations to Lucy Karger and her team who deserve all the credit for the implementation of this critical program.”
