THE FEDERAL Member for Leichhardt, Warren Entsch, today congratulated Cooktown for being named Queensland’s Tidiest Town for 2014.
The Tidy Town award, presented by the not-for-profit Keep Australia Beautiful National Association, encourages, motivates and celebrates the achievements of rural and regional communities across Australia. Previous Queensland winners have included Mundubbera, Longreach, Caloundra, and Stanthorpe.
“This is an outstanding achievement, and shows Cooktown is able to really punch above its weight, particularly given the challenge they faced in the aftermath of Cyclone Ita earlier this year,” said Mr Entsch.
“I’m thrilled for the town but, I must say, not entirely surprised given the legendary character and spirit of the Cooktown community.
“To win, they’ve shown they can stand head and shoulders above larger towns in Queensland many whom have access to more resources to be crowned the tidiest of them all,” he said.
Mr Entsch said the Far North Queensland town will now compete against Titjikala (Northern Territory), Gloucester (New South Wales), Beechworth (Victoria), Westbury (Tasmania), Meningie (South Australia), and Toodyay (Western Australia) for the prize of 2015 Australian Tidy Town.
